Schartz to be inducted into Wichita Sports Hall of Fame

Longtime City League and current Kapaun Mount Carmel football coach, Weston Schartz, will be inducted into the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame.

“I feel proud and reflected back upon all the players and coaches I have had the opportunity to work with,” Schartz said.

Schartz’s started his career in 1987 at Wichita West, where he turned the Pioneers into a perennial power. West won its first league title under Schartz in 1993 when the Pioneers took down Wichita Northwest .

West also made it to the 1997 Class 6A title game, where it lost a close contest to Olathe North.

Schartz then moved on to Northwest, where he continued to have success, culminating in an undefeated league season in 2005.

Last season, which was his first at Kapaun, Schartz led the Crusaders to an 8-2 record.

Throughout his career, Schartz has been chosen the City League Coach of the Year six times and last season he was chosen the 5A Coach of the Year.

In his career, Schartz has won 205 games and has been the head coach in the Shrine Bowl four times.

Schartz not only credits his players for a successful career, but the support he received at home was vital, too.

“My wife, Nancy, has been my most important person in my coaching career, showing support for my teams, while doing a great job raising our family,” Schartz said. “My two daughters. Lindsay and Shaye, have been filling many roles from cheerleading to being dad’s biggest fans.”

Schartz still desires to continue his career, while hopefully turning the Crusaders into a Class 5A power once again.

“I would like to turn Kapaun Mt. Caramel into a consistent winner,” Schartz said. “And keep doing the job I love so much.”
