Wichita West’s Ramona Jones – Driving Change Spotlight: Presented by KTAG

Volunteering and building relationships are two things Ramona Jones is great at. The mother of two student-athletes at Wichita West High School, Jones is a fixture with the girl’s basketball team and a welcomed face when the team is in need.

“I think I enjoy being able to support the team in another way other than in the stands,” said Jones. “The same reason any athlete, better yet, any student wants to see a familiar face by their side at a time when they want to have a great time and be great, yet need that assurance from the side that reminds them good, bad or indifferent someone is there by their side.”

Her support is unwavering and head coach Kevin Jolley said she is simply all-around amazing.

“She helped us with some fundraising, and she is very supportive. In a small time, she has already formed a good bond with the girls,” said Jolley.

Even though this is her first-year volunteering for the team, Jones has helped in the concession stand and passes along words of encouragement and empowerment to help motivate the players. She loves being part of the West family.

“After experiencing other schools in the city, I would have to say consistency and honoring a word when given is what I love most about the school. The staff, as well as the coaching staff welcomed my daughters with open arms, in a way that I have not experienced since I was a child. Especially now living in a “Plandemic” people are not as open and caring and unfortunately the children suffer due to the loss of relationship connection,” said Jones. “I believe it is necessary not only for student-athletes but all students. From the classroom to the lunchroom to the gym, West High has been the best experience for my daughters.”

Jones said there are plenty of other people who deserve recognition.

“I have to give thanks to the Most High first and humbly thank coach Jolley, coach M and coach Hall for putting me in the spotlight. I am honored and don’t take it lightly. I want to thank all the young ladies on the basketball team because they are my reasons why. West High ladies are special, and this city is about to be surprised. Let’s go Lady Pioneers!”
