Cason Richardson of Hesston was voted as the Wichita Small School Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Richardson, who is just a junior, received over 1,300 votes, which was 41 percent of the overall vote.
“It means a lot to be the one voted, but it’s an honor to even be up for this year,” Richardson said.
Richardson’s stats were staggering for a Swather team that went 23-1 and won the 3A Tournament. He averaged 16 points per game, while also grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists per game. Richardson shot 57 percent from the floor, 34 percent from behind the three-point line and 75 percent from the free throw line.
In Hesston’s state title game against Galena, Richardson dropped a game-high 16 points.
“I would say that overall it was a good season, we played great team ball at the end of the year and finished really well,” Richardson said. “I think I improved on some leadership things this year.”
