Steve Rothwell – YMCA Yi-Belong Profile

Steve Rothwell was chosen for the YMCA Yi-Belong feature for August. Rothwell has been involved with the YMCA since 2017, where he coaches basketball and soccer.

“I have always loved competitive sports which has led me into coaching my kids,” Rothwell said. “My kids have a great community at church and school.”

Rothwell said that while the YMCA was around when he was a kid, it was not nearly has involved as it is now, which is a blessing for the community.

“It’s great being able to kid gets involved in youth sports at such a young age regardless of skill level,” Rothwell said. “I believe it is important to teach kids to live a healthy and active lifestyle and it is rewarding to see the YMCA and its volunteers provide that opportunity.”

Seeing kids embrace something new and grow into a sport is part of the recommendation Rothwell would give to a prospective volunteer.

“Jump in and volunteer,” Rothwell said. “It is great seeing kids learn a game, learn to compete and seeing them have fun with friends.”

Trying to balance volunteering, his work life and being a father is difficult, but Rothwell embraces it.

“Depending on the season it can be up to four to five days a week,” Rothwell said. “My kids are young and very active so we are very busy, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
