Q&A with Wichita North’s Makenna Wilburn – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Anchor Rentals

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My personal goals for this year are going back to state for shotput and placing higher than I did last year. I also want to improve my distances for discus and javelin. My main focus was shotput last year, so I didn’t have as much time to focus on other throws and improve at them.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

The most fun I’ve had in the last year was going to football games and getting to dress up in the fun student section themes and getting to mess around with all my friends.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

My 5th-grade teacher would definitely be my favorite teacher. His name is Mr. Schmidt. He always did fun things in class, and we went on field trips.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

Making it to state my sophomore year and throwing a PR while being there. The atmosphere is so cool there and it makes me want to go back again this year.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

I’m not sure that a specific teammate has left a big impact on me, but I had a volleyball team that I loved so much, and if I could be around them all the time I absolutely would. I made so many amazing memories with them.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part of being on this team is the atmosphere. We all have so much fun around each other and it’s like we’re a family.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

If I could go anywhere on vacation I would go somewhere with a beach, and I would take my best friend with me.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

I would go shopping for new clothes and shoes.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I volunteer what an organization called shower up. It’s a trailer that moves all through the city offering a shower to the homeless community, they also offer a change of clothes and toiletries.

VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?

I’ve been in the national honors society since the beginning of my sophomore year, and I am also in AVID. I’ve been in AVID since 7th grade, and I love it.
