Maize South 58, Andover Central 34

Over the final three quarters of Thursday’s season opener, the Maize South girls dominated Andover Central en route to the 58-34 victory.

But with seven minutes remaining in the first half, Maize South led 14-9 lead over Andover Central with seven minutes.

What a final seven minutes, though. The Mavericks went on a scoring spree, consistently getting to the basket and outscoring Andover Central 27-6 in the period for a 39-15 lead at the break.

Maize South was led by Ashley Singateh, who had 12 points, while Sophie Hurley and Ava Howie each had 10.

Andover Central’s Hayden Snodgrass had a team-high 15 points with two three-pointers, and Taylin Tabor hit three threes.

Boys

Maize South 75, Andover Central 60

Maize South had four players in double figures – Jaren Askren made three three-pointers and had a team-high 19 points, Tory Homan scored 18, Darius Felton had 13, Sam Kemp 11.

While Maize South controlled the game, Andover Central sure made it interesting.

Andover Central got within 18-14 midway through the second quarter before Maize South went on a 17-7 run for the 35-23 lead at the half.

Andover Central went on another run, cutting the lead to 43-32 midway through the third as Cole Newfarmer’s basket capped a 7-0 run. Maize South responded by scoring eight unanswered and had a 60-41 lead after three.

Down 67-46, Andover Central got within 69-58 with 1:36 to go but couldn’t get closer.

Andover Central’s Jayden Brown had a game-high 25 points, hitting four threes.
