Hillsboro Girls Basketball – Visit Wichita Team of the Month

By Matt Browning

The Hillsboro girls basketball team was chosen as the Visit Wichita Team of the Month for March. The Trojans won at Haven on February 9 and defeated Hesston at home on February 11.

Hillsboro has been ranked in the top five of VYPE’s Salina Area Basketball Rankings for nearly the entire season.

“Our depth has been a large part of our success this year,” Hillsboro coach Nathan Hiebert said. “We have 10 girls that play consistently, all 10 of them have played key parts to victories this season.  This depth also allows us to have high-level practices, which in turn helps us prepare better for games.”

Hiebert said he thought his team had a chance to be particularly strong and the Trojans have core principles they abide by, which has also led to the team’s success this season.

“We have five core principles that we talk about: humility, passion, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness,” Hiebert said. “We talk about servanthood a lot, serving our teammates – desiring to love them and push them to be their best, they have really grown in doing this in practices and games.”

Three-year starter and leading scorer Teegan Werth leads the Trojans at point guard. Senior post player Jessica Saunders has emerged as the team’s No. 2 scorer, while freshman Zaylee Werth is the Trojans’ third-leading scorer.
