Cheney’s Halley Jones – KTA Driving Change Athlete of the Month

Halley Jones is a senior at Cheney High School and before the pandemic hit, Jones was very active doing volunteer work for her church.

“My church was in need of some PSR teachers and so I started helping my sophomore year and ended up becoming the 1st grade teacher my junior year. I also would help my mom during the summer working at her childcare center. I helped her watch the kids and sometimes I would go to the pool or on walks with them,” said Jones.

The varsity golfer was able to find time between teaching and helping her mom to medal at the state tournament. Today she is the No.1 bag for Cheney High School.

“I started playing golf the summer going into my junior year. I didn’t really want to continue playing volleyball, so my PE teacher Mr. Leroux, who was also the girls golf coach at the time, encouraged me to give golf a try. He taught me how to swing a club during class one day and got me all excited about it, so that summer I learned to play,” said Jones who is also a member of the softball team at Cheney.

Jones is determined to have the same success in the classroom. She is a member of National Honor Society and said that her English teacher has made a big impact on her life.

“Coach Hiebert, my senior year coach and English teacher, is someone who has influenced me a lot, on and off the course. He not only would push me to become a better golfer, but also to become a better person. He showed me what it means to truly care about what you do and how you do it. He would constantly go above and beyond for the team and did all he could to help us,” said Jones.

Jones said she plans to attend college next fall and is excited to start the next chapter of her life.

“After I graduate, I plan on attending Kansas State university and majoring in architectural engineering,” said Jones.
