The Campus baseball team was in an envious spot heading into the 2020 season.
The Colts returned five starters and eight players from the 2019 state tournament championship team, two of which were first team all-league pitchers in Jackson Hartley and Tanner Leslie.
Having just one dominant pitcher at the high school level is advantageous, but having two makes a team nearly unbeatable if they have offense to support it.
Campus had just that as both Hartley and Leslie played in the field when not on the mound. Add in Austin Warkins, T.J. Waits, Tyler Gates and Diego Escamilla and the Colts had everything.
Prediction: It was déjà vu for Campus at the 6A Tournament, as they defeated two teams they defeated in the 2019 tournament. The Colts took care of Derby 6-2 in the semifinals before taking on Lawrence-Free State again in the finals. Campus went back-to-back as they defeated the Firebirds 4-0 in the finals.
In the Colts’ five postseason games, their pitching staff allowed only four earned runs.
