After Bishop Carroll lost in the sub-state finals, the path for the Andover boys basketball team to win their first state championship became a little clearer.
The Trojans survived No. 8 seed Blue Valley Southwest in the quarterfinals of the 5A Tournament, which set up a match up with Kapaun Mount Carmel in the semifinals.
Prediction: While the Crusaders went toe-to-toe with Andover, the Trojans standout post player, Jack Johnson, was simply too much. Andover defeated Kapaun 54-50 to advance to the championship game. Johnson scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the victory.
In the finals, the Trojans took on No. 2 seed Basehor-Linwood, which handily defeated Hays in the semifinals. While Johnson was the hero for Andover against Kapaun, it was Harper Jonas that led the way against Basehor, scoring a game-high 19 points in the Trojans’ thrilling 53-50 victory to earn the school’s first boys basketball championship.
