The Bishop Carroll girls soccer team entered the 5A semifinals as the No. 1 seed with a record of 18-1.
But the Eagles fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 2-0 and due to weather were not able to play in the consolation game.
Carroll returned four first team all-league (Taryn Lubbers, Khloe Schuckman, Taylor Bockover and Madi Wingler) and two second team all-league players (Anna Lasak and Libby Brooks) in 2020. The Eagles actually returned nine key members from the 2019 team.
Prediction: Class 5A girls soccer in the Wichita-area is full of talent. Maize, Maize South and Kapaun Mount Carmel are just some of the teams that were threats to Carroll in the 5A Central/South Central Regional.
But the Eagles proved to be too much for all of those teams.
Carroll defeated Hays in the regional final, before taking down Maize in the state quarterfinals to again advance to the state semifinals.
With a record of 17-1, Carroll faced off against Blue Valley Southwest in the semifinals and won 2-0 to set up a rematch with St. Thomas Aquinas in the finals.
It took overtime, but the Eagles defeated the Saints 1-0 on a Schuckman goal for the school’s first state championship.
