The Wellington golf program took second at the 2019 4A Tournament in Dodge City and with its entire team coming back, the Crusaders were the undoubted favorite to win the 2020 tournament.
State golf was heading to a new two-day format in 2020, which would favor the better teams because it takes out the possibility of one team getting hot on one day.
Junior Blake Saffell and sophomore Deitrick Gill both placed in the top 15 at last season’s tournament.
Prediction: After shooting 77 and finishing fifth in 2019, Saffell shot a two-day total of 149 (73-76), which crowned him state champion. Gill finished fifth with a score of 158 (80-78).
Led by Saffell and Gill’s scores, Wellington took home the 4A team crown by shooting a 632 (314-318).
It was the Crusader’s 11th state championship and first time winning since 1983.
