Once Haven was upset in the quarterfinals of the 3A Tournament by St. Mary’s, it seemed like the winner of the Wichita Collegiate-Beloit semifinal matchup would have the inside track to winning a state championship.
The Spartans defeated Colby 58-46 in the quarterfinals, but the Trojans would possess a much greater threat.
Prediction: After trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, Collegiate opened the second half on a 13-4 run to tie the score at 41 heading into the fourth quarter. Grady Dick scored nine points in the fourth quarter, as Collegiate defeated Beloit 57-50 to earn a spot in the title game.
While No. 8 seed St. Mary’s had been on an incredible run, the Bears were also the No. 6 seed in sub-state, the Spartans simply had too much firepower.
Collegiate defeated St. Mary’s 61-44 to win the school’s seventh state championship.
