Campus High School’s Barrett Roads
Athlete Spotlight Presented by USD 261 Haysville Schools
When Barrett Roads of Campus High School stepped onto the football field for the first time, he was only nine years old. Now a senior, Roads is ready to lead the Colts to a winning season. Head coach Jamie Cruce had high praises for the linebacker and offensive lineman.
“Barrett has been a two-way starter and was 2nd Team All-AVCTL Div. I as a junior. Should have a standout year at linebacker and when he plays on our offensive line, will be a very effective player. Plays with passion and drives others to improve each day,” said Cruce.
Known for his defensive play, Roads, as coach Cruce mentioned, will likely see time at center, which is something Roads is excited to do. But his forte is playing linebacker and Roads has developed into one of the top linebackers in the Wichita area. His work ethic is contagious, and he enjoys seeing his teammates respond in kind. “I love how we work hard every day and still make practice fun,” said Roads.
This off-season Roads has put in the work to become as valuable to the team as he can possibly be. From working on his speed and technique, the 2021 version of Barrett Roads is the best his opponents have seen. “I’ve really worked on my speed and for the team we are more of a complete team this year,” said Roads.
His goals this season include making more than 50 tackles, but the team goals are more important to Roads. Under his leadership on defense, Roads wants to help his team finish the season with more wins than loses. “I think we can be better than we are expected to be if everyone buys in and gives their all,” said Roads.
Being a student-athlete means the grades come first. Roads said he strives to excel at everything he does including the work in the classroom. One day Roads would like to become a teacher and coach, having been influenced in a positive way by his father. “My biggest influence on and off the field has been my father, he is my best friend, coach, and my biggest supporter,” said Roads.
